Wood has always been used as a natural material. As such, it is subject to various biological and physical processes that can degrade its quality over time. Issues such as weather resistance, aging, strength, microbial decay, and interfacial effects (e.g., water repellency) can be significantly improved by modifying the surface and applying protective coatings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples of surface modifications & protective coatings include:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 consolidation<\/strong> (impregnation with strength-enhancing materials, such as silicification, or chemical cross-linking of wood fibers)
\u2022 wood preservation to protect against wood-damaging insects and fungi<\/strong> (immobilization of biocidal agents on the wood surface and within the wood structure)
\u2022 protection against UV radiation and premature aging<\/strong>
\u2022 water repellency<\/strong> (treatment with a permanently stable hydrophobic agent)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
