The aim of the project was to develop a hand disinfection process based on optical radiation in the blue and UVB spectral range, which kills at least 99% of microorganisms in 60 s without contact and without chemicals and at the same time contributes to improving vitamin D supply. Blue light in the wavelength range around 400 nm can kill bacterial pathogens effectively and without additives. UVB radiation around 308 nm can also stimulate vitamin D synthesis in the skin. When used regularly, the implemented demonstrator with a total of more than 900 LEDs is able to generate a vitamin D dose of 80 international units (IU) per day in the skin. The system also demonstrated a 68% reduction of germs in 60 s.
