Project: “BeVelO”

Development of coatings with high abrasion resistance for functional films with easy-to-clean surfaces.

The project aimed to develop a coating made from an innovative composite material by combining SiO2 and polyorganosiloxane (silicone) using the Sol-Gel process. This resulted in a coating with improved abrasion resistance and anti-adhesion properties that surpass the performance of traditional Sol-Gel coatings. SiO2 acts as the structural support for the layer and provides adhesion to the substrate surface, while the polyorganosiloxane imparts anti-adhesion properties, hydrophobicity, and improved flexibility. The hydrophobic nature of the coating ensures easy cleaning of the surface. Additionally, the project aimed to identify or develop a technological process that could be used to deposit these abrasion-resistant layers in a production setting. One key application of the coating was to enhance the wear resistance of polymer film surfaces.

The developed abrasion-resistant coatings feature a low curing temperature, making them suitable for use on heat-sensitive substrates like polymer films. In contrast, common anti-adhesion coatings require a higher curing temperature of 180°C, restricting their application to substrates with sufficient thermal stability.
