Innovation Areas – Department “Functional Coatings”

The main focus of the Department Dresden “Functional Coatings” is the functionalization and modification of material surfaces. A variety of properties can be significantly influenced by surface chemistry and topography. Through coatings and chemical and physical surface modifications, surface properties can be precisely tailored to specific needs.

Innovation Areas:

  • Coatings & Surface Modifications: Development and processing of thin films on various material surfaces (such as wood, metal, textiles, glass, plastic, and paper) to tailor physical, chemical, and/or biological properties.
  • Immobilization of Active Substances and Microorganisms: Incorporation of bioactive substances and (living) microorganisms to generate bioactive surfaces/materials for applications in biotechnology, environmental technologies, and sensors.
  • Antimicrobial Protective Equipment & Testing: Coating material surfaces with antimicrobial substances and evaluating their effectiveness against microbial activity.
  • Catalytic Coatings: Development and testing of catalytically and photocatalytically active coatings.
  • Sol-Gel Process: Synthesis and application of nanoscale coating solutions (nanosols) for creating thin metal oxide layers, as well as inorganic/organic hybrid coatings and gels.
