Ultraviolet radiation is ideal for killing germs in drinking water, in the air or on surfaces. The main reason for this is effective damage to the cell DNA of microorganisms, which can then no longer multiply. This is why treatment with UV-C is also a recognized and approved method for disinfecting drinking water.
GMBU e.V. cooperates with various partners in the field of biodosimetry, including the company UMEX GmbH, when it comes to standard-compliant type testing in accordance with DVGW W294 or ÖNORM M 5873-1.
In a recently completed R&D project on room air disinfection, new technical approaches for the UV disinfection of room air were developed in cooperation with the company PRECHTL Lufttechnik GmbH in order to make ventilation shafts of air conditioning systems germ-free, for example. Among other things, this resulted in the partner’s “UV AirProtector”, a floor-standing column for treating indoor air.
Another research project dealt with the UV treatment of touchscreen surfaces. In the joint project “CleanScreen” within the “CleanHand” network, GMBU e.V. was involved in microbiological work and optosensory developments to determine the degree of contamination of control panels of public vending machines and to ensure the prerequisites for experimental simulations to safely sterilize germ-contaminated surface materials made of glass or plastics with UV light.
